The Great Basin needs more plant and seed for conservation projects.

Wildfire recovery, mine reclamation, habitat improvement, transportation corridors, and clean energy development are looking for the same scarce resource: locally adapted native seed and plants. At the Smith-Gage Ranch, the Walker Basin Conservancy is building a larger nursery that will fill this need.

Consider that;

  • 1 Million acres burn annually across the Great Basin.

  • 70% of the Great Basin is public land managed for habitat and recreation.

  • Millions of native plants are needed for restoration work yearly.

Help us Expand the Nursery!  Together We Can Drive Impact for the Great Basin

We're raising the final $600,000 needed to complete the nursery by September 30, 2026. Be a part of the effort to increase the availability of native plants the region needs.

A Foundation for the Future

The Smith-Gage Ranch is an 850 acre property where WBC plans to grow millions of native plants a year. Phase I lays the foundation of this expansion.

  • GreenhouseA 10,000 sq ft climate-controlled structure for year-round propagation, improving germination and protecting seedlings from weather extremes.
  • HeadhouseThe operational hub on the north side of the greenhouse: potting, soil and media storage, irrigation controls, and staff work areas.
  • Shade structureA protected space for hardening off young plants before they move outdoors, raising survival rates before planting.
  • Seed drying & cleaningDedicated buildings for processing wild-collected seed ahead of propagation.
